A new poll has found that 76 per cent of Los Angeles residents are in favour of the city hosting the 2028 Olympic Games, despite vocal criticism from protest groups in the past.

The survey, conducted by the Los Angeles Times, quizzed people living in the Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Support for the Californian city hosting the Games stood at 79 per cent among people of colour and 71 per cent among white people.

More than three-quarters of respondents backing Los Angeles staging its third Olympics and first Paralympics will be welcome news for the Organising Committee.

Games organisers have claimed that up to $160 million (£117 million/€140 million) will be invested into increasing sporting opportunities for children.

With the vast majority of venues already built, organisers also claim their focus will be on youth- and inclusion-centric community projects.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has also said that up to $1 billion (£737 million/€881 million) could be provided to ensure 28 transport projects are completed in time for the event.

Despite the investment into the local community, there has been firm criticism of Los Angeles Games.

The NOlympicsLA pressure group has vehemently voiced its concern over Los Angeles hosting the Games, and claimed it was behind a gatecrashed International Olympic Committee media conference held prior to Tokyo 2020.

"No Olympics in LA, no Olympics in Tokyo," was chanted by an activist.

NOlympicsLA claims that there was a direct correlation between the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and the militarisation of American police, and it fears that the same could occur in 2028.

Furthermore, the group protested against the construction of the SoFi Stadium to raise awareness of the displacement of communities in the Inglewood area.

Los Angeles 2028 chairperson Casey Wasserman has insisted that homelessness in the city is not the Organising Committee's problem to solve and that politicians should be taking responsibility for the crisis.

A 2020 survey estimated there were 63,706 homeless people in Los Angeles, with the 2021 survey abandoned because of the COVID-19 crisis.

SoFi Stadium, which is home to the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, is expected to host the Opening and Closing ceremonies for the 2028 Games alongside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Football and archery are also expected to be held at the venue, while it is this weekend staging the Super Bowl - the National Football League's marquee game.

Residents were also asked whether they were in favour of Los Angeles hosting the Super Bowl tomorrow in the Los Angeles Times poll, with 63 per cent saying they were looking forward to seeing the event in the city.
