India's Lovlina Borgohain, who claimed a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, started her campaign in the women's under-75 kilogram tournament with a tight victory at the Asian Boxing Championships in Amman.

Having twice won bronze at the Asian Championships, Borgohain got over one of the toughest challengers in her category.

She was up against another medal favourite from the off, defeating 2016 world champion Valentina Khalzova of Kazakhstan by a 3-2 split decision.

India were successful in other categories too, with world bronze medallist Parveen Hooda winning by unanimous decision in the women's under-63kg tournament against Panpatchara Somnijek from Thailand.

Ankhushita Boro won unanimously in the women's under-66kg against Japan's Tsubata Arisa, as did Preeti in the women's under-57kg tournament against Sitora Turdibekova of Uzbekistan.

Minakshi won by a 4-1 split decision too in the women's under-52kg against Irish Magno of the Philippines.

Thailand's Jutamas Jitpong, who won a world silver in Istanbul this year, progressed in the same weight class as Shekerbekova with a 4-1 split decision win over Nigina Uktamova of Uzbekistan.

In the only men's weight class today, world champions Saken Bibossinov of Kazakhstan and Tomoya Tsuboi from Japan advanced to the next round.

Both won world titles in Belgrade last year, with Tsuboi dropping a category.

Bibossinov defeated Qaiyum Ariffin of Malaysia unanimously, with Tsuboi winning by a 5-0 verdict over Po-Wei Tu of Chinese Taipei.
