Egypt is set to stage the first Four-a-Side Wheelchair Handball World Championship ©IHF

The inaugural Four-a-Side Wheelchair Handball World Championship is set to take place in Cairo next month with six teams from four continents featuring.

The competition is scheduled for September 22 to 25 with the Netherlands, Slovenia, Brazil, Chile, India and hosts Egypt all due to compete.

The Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall will host all of the tournament's matches which will consist of a preliminary round-robin format before the top two teams in the group face each other for the gold medal.

The venue also staged fixtures at last month's African Men's Handball Championship.

The upcoming event is due to be played with mixed gender teams with each a minimum of two female players required to be in the squad and one of those on the court at all times.


Brazil face Slovenia while Chile will be up against the Netherlands in the opening matches.

There are six games scheduled for the first two days before the group stage action concludes with three matches on September 24.

A finals day will then occur on September 25 with the gold, bronze, and fifth-place play-offs.

Wheelchair handball is one of a record 33 applications in place for sports to feature at the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.

It joins the likes of arm wrestling, sport climbing, golf, karate, cerebral palsy football, powerchair football, dance sport, sailing and surfing which have all applied.
