The Group B opener between the two old adversaries looked set to be a mouth-watering tie but it turned out to be a one-sided affair as Brazil ran out emphatic winners at the Estadio Centenario in Armenia in Chile.

Adriana struck twice and Bia Zaneratto and Debinha bagged the other goals as Brazil started their bid for a fourth successive title and eighth overall.

Argentina are the only other winners of the Copa América Femenina, triumphing in 2006 and finished third in 2018.

But they fell behind when Adriana netted the opener on 28 minutes before Zaneratto scored from the penalty spot after being brought down by Ruth Bravo.

Brazil moved further ahead with Adriana completing her brace just shy of the hour mark after latching onto Zaneratto’s pass.

Debinha then scored Brazil's fourth and final goal with three minutes remaining to wrap up a convincing victory.

In the other Group B match, Venezuela started their campaign with a 1-0 win over Uruguay thanks to a superb free-kick from Deyna Castellanos.

The 23-year-old captain struck home from 25 yards with 12 minutes left as Venezuela edged Uruguay.

Competition is due to continue on Monday (July 11) with hosts Colombia facing Bolivia and Paraguay tackling Chile in Group A.
