Second seed Thibault Tricole battled into the third round of the World Darts Federation (WDF) World Championship at Lakeside Country Club.

The Frenchman had been one of 16 seeds to receive a bye through the opening round of men’s competition in Surrey, England.

His tournament began with a test against Canadian qualifier Shawn Burt.

Tricole won the opening set of the contest, but appeared on the brink of elimination when Burt claimed the next two.

The seeded player responded impressively to level the contest, before completing a 3-2 victory.

Tricole will now face England’s Steve Hine, who recorded a straight sets win over the United States’ Leonard Gates.

The Netherlands’ Richard Veenstra won the first third round match of the competition, overcoming England’s Luke Littler 3-0.

Veenstra awaits the winner of the match between top seed Brian Raman of Belgium and English qualifier Jarred Cole.

The women’s competition saw top seed Deta Hedman of England fall to qualifier Tori Kewish.

The Australian earned a 2-0 victory to reach the quarter-finals.

Kewish will now face England’s Lorraine Winstanley, who beat Sweden’s Vicky Pruim in straight sets.

The WDF World Championships is taking place for the first time at the Lakeside Country Club.

The venue previously hosted the British Darts Organisation (BDO) World Championship.

The BDO went into liquidation in 2020, with the WDF World Championships now serving as the successor.
