The world number ones in their respective categories, Yang Yung Wei and Denis Vieru, triumphed in the men’s events on day one of the International Judo Federation Antalya Grand Slam.

In the men’s under-60kg category, Yang Yung Wei of Chinese Taipei, the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist and world number one was fancied to triumph and did so, edging past Lukhumi Chkhvimiani of Georgia with a seoi-nage proving the crucial score in an explosive encounter.

Bronze medals went to Francisco Garrigos of Spain and Dilshodbek Baratov of Uzbekistan.

In the men’s under-66kg, world number one Denis Vieru of Moldova confirmed his place as top ranked fighter in the category, winning gold.

Vieru triumphed in golden score against Brazil’s Willian Lima, with bronze medals going to Tal Flicker of Israel and Sardor Nurillaev of Uzbekistan.

In the women’s under-48 kilograms category, the final was an all Mongolian affair between Narantsetseg Ganbaatar and Baasankhuu Bavuudorj.

Ganbaatar received three separate penalties, meaning a disqualification, and this led to Bavuudorj being declared the winner.

Melanie Legoux Clement of France and Milika Nikolic of Serbia won the bronze medal contests in the category.

In the women’s under-52kg category, Reka Pupp of Hungary claimed a stylish gold with a devastating o-soto-gari to defeat Uzbekistan’s Diyora Keldiyorova.

Odette Giuffrida of Italy and Astride Gneto of France won the bronze medal contests.

In a strong women’s under-57kg category, gold went to Canada’s Jessica Klimkait, with the reigning world champion needing only 30 seconds to defeat Sarah Leonie Cysique of France by ippon.

Bronze medals went to Timna Nelson Levy of Israel and Jessica Lima of Brazil.

Competition is scheduled to continue at the Antalya Sports Hall tomorrow.
