Finswimming is the latest sport to feature on the International University Sports Federation (FISU) calendar, with the first-ever FISU University World Cup Finswimming set to begin in Italy tomorrow.

Bella Italia Sports Village in Lignano Sabbiadoro is the venue for the University World Cup, with competition due to take place in an Olympic-size swimming pool.

Surface finswimming, apnea finswimming and immersion finswimming are all on the agenda.

Racing begins tomorrow, with nine finals scheduled.

A further nine finals appear on the timetable for Saturday (April 2).

Ninety-one student-athletes, from 55 universities and representing 15 countries, are expected to compete.

Ukraine's Oleksii Zakharov - a surface finswimming world champion over 400 and 800 metres - is among them.

Consuelo Dametto, a world champion in open water, is one of the high-profile Italian swimmers due to race.

University World Cups eschew national delegations in exchange for university-versus-university competition.

An Opening Ceremony was held today before racing starts tomorrow.
