Peru will take their place in the FIFA World Cup Intercontinental qualifiers after first-half goals from Gianluca Lapadula and Yoshimar Yotún gave them a 2-0 victory over Paraguay at the the Estadio Nacional in Lima.

They are now due to either Australia or the United Arab Emirates in a June playoff for a place in the final tournament in Qatar, due to start on November 21 and conclude on December 18. 

Uruguay had beaten the Peruvians 1-0 earlier at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo last Friday (March 24) to secure their direct qualification to Qatar. 

Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored the decisive goal.

Peru reached the 2018 finals in Russia by defeating New Zealand in an intercontinental playoff to qualify for their fifth appearance at the World Cup but their first since Spain 1982.

The Uruguayans celebrated their qualification with a 2-0 victory over Chile at the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo in Santiago.

A spectacular bicycle kick by Luis Suarez was his 29th goal and took him above Lionel Messi as the most successful South American marksman in World Cup qualifiers.

Other results meant that Ecuador qualified, despite a 3-1 defeat to Paraguay at the Estadio Antonio Aranda in Ciudad del Este last Friday.

They finished with a 1-1 against already qualified Argentina at the Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo in Guayaquil.

Argentina had led through a first-half goal by Julián Álvarez.

Ecuador were awarded a penalty by video assistant referee referral in the third minute of stoppage time after Nicolás Tagliafico handled.

Enner Valencia had his first attempt saved by Argentinian keeper Geronimo Rulli but he followed up to score the equaliser as Ecuador celebrated qualification for their fourth World Cup finals.

Five-time World Cup winners Brazil, who had already qualified, completed their campaign with a 4-0 win over Bolivia at the Estadio Hernando Siles in La Paz.

Lucas Paqueta’s opener was followed by Richarlison, who scored both at the end of the first-half and the second.

Bruno Guimaraes scored the other Brazilian goal.

Brazil take their place in draw in Doha on Friday (April 1) as the only nation to have played in every final tournament since it was first held in 1930. 

Colombia beat Venezuela in their final match at the Polideportivo Cachamay in Ciudad Guayanathanks to a goal from James Rodriguez, but miss out on qualification for the first time since South Africa 2010.
