The opening round has finally been finished at the Players Championship, but the weather continues to delay proceedings and made the going very tough at TPC Sawgrass.

It is telling that only one of the top five players has started their second round - Tommy Fleetwood, who has played three just three holes - as uncharacteristic wind proved too much to handle for many of the PGA Tour's leading players.

The clubhouse was the best place to be today and a staggering 29 balls went into the water on the 17th hole alone - the course's iconic peninsula par three.

England's Fleetwood made one birdie and one bogey over his three holes today before darkness stooped play to remain at six under par, tied for the lead with American Tom Hoge.

Brice Garnett of the United Sates had been tied for the lead overnight, but dropped one stroke completing his first round and then dropped another three through the first 15 holes of round two.

Garnett finds himself tied for 23rd place on two under, with fellow American and two-time major winner Dustin Johnson on the same score after two full rounds, following a one-over 73 in round two which is more impressive than it may appear at first.

Defending champion Justin Thomas played the round of the day, a bogey-free 69 to move to three under.

That followed the American making a double bogey on the 18th hole in round one, which he completed today.

The projected cut is at even par, but with so many players still to complete their second round and more wind expected tomorrow, that figure is likely to change.

Rory McIlroy - the champion in 2019 - is among those hoping it does, as he sits at two over par following back-to-back 73s, playing with Thomas and Collin Morikawa.

Two-time major champion Morikawa is four over, four-time major champion Brooks Koepka nine over and Olympic champion Xander Schauffele seven over, tied with three-time major champion Jordan Spieth.

All four are American.

Play is due to continue tomorrow, with at least one extra day and likely two needed to complete the PGA Tour's flagship event, which this year boasts an increased purse of $20 million (£15.2 million/€18.2 million).
