The President of the Mexican Olympic Committee (COM), María José Alcalá Izguerra, has inaugurated a new wrestling gym at the Mexican Olympic Sports Center.

Additionally, the COM opened the level one coaches course in association with the Federation of Associated Wrestling Medallists (FEMELA), United World Wrestling (UWW) and with support from Olympic Solidarity.

Alcalá was joined at the inauguration ceremony by Daniel Aceves Villagrán, first vice-president of the COM, Guillermo Díaz, head of FEMELA, Yuri Maier, sports and development officer of the UWW and Mario García de la Torre, general secretary of the COM.

She stressed the importance of having the facility at the heart of the Olympic development in Mexico.

"I want to thank all of you for being here in the house of the fight, in the Mexican Olympic Committee, especially Memo [Díaz], what you have done in these few weeks has been an example, they already have an office here and they already have a gym so they can work out," said Alcalá.

"We know that we are going to give results in this Olympic cycle, not only with high-performance wrestling, but also in initiation, intermediate and advanced wrestling and I would like to fight together because the wrestling centre for Latin America is here, I believe that Mexico has always shown his sports diplomacy, his management skills, that's why we want that training centre here."

Díaz recognised the efforts of the COM and the FEMELA staff to carry out the project of the new gym and offices.

After the opening of the gym, Alcalá participated in the 2022 Ordinary General Assembly of the Mexican Handball Federation, headed by Mario García de la Torre at the Olympic Museum.

The coaches course began yesterday and is set to conclude on Wednesday (March 16).

Mexico's first and only medal in wrestling at the Olympic Games came in 1984 when Daniel Aceves won silver in the men's under-52 kilogram category.
