Tournament favourites Adham Hatem Elgamal and Doha Hany of Egypt remain firmly in sight of the men's and women's titles at the All Africa Individual Badminton Championships as they advanced to the round of 16 in Kampala.

After receiving a bye through the round of 64, Elgamal defeated Robert White of South Africa 21-10, 18-21, 21-17 to set up a tie with Botswana's Kethabanetswe Godknows.

Elgamal is the highest-ranked player in the men's singles tournament in Uganda.

The defending champion sits 113th in the world with 19,371 points from 23 tournaments.

Elgamal beat compatriot Ahmed Salah 21-14, 21-14, in the 2021 final edition which was also held in the Ugandan capital.

Godknows beat Jakim Renaud of the Seychelles 21-11, 21-12 in his opener before being awarded a walkover victory against Ghana's Ruddock Quarcoo.

Brian Kasirye is the highest-ranking Ugandan remaining in the draw.

He is set to face compatriot Amos Muyanja in the next round following a 21-14, 21-12 win against Tejraj Pultoo of Mauritius in just 22 minutes.

Hany, who sits 93rd in the women's singles world rankings, has skated through to the round of 16.

The 2019 African Games gold medallist received a bye in the first round before taking a walkover victory against Ghanaian Prospera Nantuo.

She is due to face Amy Ackerman next following the South African's 21-4, 21-9 drubbing of Estelle Leperlier of Réunion.

Hany, could well find her toughest competition in the form of countrywoman Nour Ahmed Youssri, who is the ranked second in the draw.

However, she is still some way off Hany at 216th  in the world rankings.

Ahmed Youssri breezed past Maeva Anamba of Cameroon 21-10, 21-9 in the round of 32 and will meet Uganda's Sharifah Wanyana next.
