Qualification places for this year's Thomas and Uber Cups are on offer at the All Africa Men's and Women's Team Badminton Championships, which are set to run from tomorrow until Thursday (February 17) at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium in Uganda's capital Kampala.

Egypt won the women's team event when they staged the Championships the last time they were held in 2020, going on to reach the delayed Uber Cup staged in Aarhus in October last year.

The Egyptians topped the round robin in Cairo to clinch the title for the first time, and beat Algeria in the final of the mixed team event at last year's African Badminton Championships in Kampala.

Algeria placed second in 2020, while the 2016 and 2018 winners Mauritius finished third.

South Africa have won the Women's Team Championship on five occasions, but lost all three matches two years ago.

In the men's team competition, Algeria successfully defended their title two years ago to earn the right to represent the continent at the Thomas Cup in Aarhus.

They beat Mauritius in the final, with the silver medallists' hopes of further success dealt a blow by the injury-enforced absence of star player Julien Paul.

South Africa, meanwhile, earned bronze at the last team championship in 2020 and in the mixed team event in Kampala last year.

Hosts Uganda surprisingly finished joint-third at the African Badminton Championships.

A total of 13 nations are set to be represented at the All Africa Men's and Women's Team Badminton Championships, with Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Réunion, Zambia and Zimbabwe also entering.

The winners of the men's and women's tournament will advance to the Thomas and Uber Cup finals respectively, which are due to be held in Thailand's capital Bangkok in May.

The Team Championships are set to be followed by the All Africa Individual Championships at the same venue from Friday (February 18) until Sunday (February 20).
