The Group A match at the Education City Stadium appeared to be drifting towards a draw, before Qatar snatch a last-gasp winner.

Substitute Fahmi Durbin attempted to clear a dangerous cross into the area, but the Omani defender saw his header hit the crossbar and bounce down behind the goal line.

Play continued for 30 seconds before Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio confirmed the ball had crossed the line after VAR advice.

Sampaio had earlier awarded Qatar a first-half penalty after a clumsy foul from Oman’s Ahmed Al-Khamisi in the area.

Akram Afif fired the hosts ahead by placing the penalty in the bottom right corner, beyond the dive of Oman’s goalkeeper Ibrahim Al Mukhaini.

Oman equalised in the 73rd minute, with Khalid Al-Hajri beating two defenders to the ball at the back post to send a diving header into the Qatar net.

Oman, who had conceded a 98^th-minute penalty to draw their group opener against Iraq, succumbed to the late own goal by Durbin.

Qatar are now assured of top spot in Group A after consecutive wins, with Iraq occupying second place in the standings.

Iraq played out a goalless draw against Bahrain at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha today, earning them a second point of the group stage.

Group B will continued with the United Arab Emirates earning their second win of the group stage with a late goal.

Khalil Ibrahim struck in the 93rd minute to give the UAE a narrow 1-0 win over Mauritania at Stadium 974 in Doha.

The result moved the UAE to the brink of earning a place in the knock-out stage.

Syria overcame Tunisia in the second Group B match of the day, scoring early in each half.

Oliver Kass Kawo scored the opener four minutes into the match, while Mohammad Anz sealed a 2-0 victory with an effort two minutes into the second half at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.

Tunisia and Syria each have one win and a defeat to their name in the group.

Tunisia will face the UAE in the final group match, while Syria will face winless Mauritania as they hope to advance to the latter stages.
