As part of the deal, the IIS will welcome Indian judoka to its campus in Bellary for training camps and sports science expertise.

Elite, junior and cadet athletes will all benefit, while the IIS will also work with the JFI to help identify talented prospects from across India.

Some of these athletes will be offered full scholarships to continue their training.

"The sport of judo has a bright future in India and has been recognised as a priority sport by the Government," said Partap Singh Bajwa, the President of the JFI and a Member of Parliament, according to local media.

"With the help of partnerships with such organisations, we are optimistic about the development of the sport in India and the country's chances at upcoming multi-sports events."

An IIS judo programme has already produced around 70 athletes.

Thangjam Tababi Devi, who came through the system, won a silver medal in the girls' under-44 kilograms event at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.

This was the first Olympic medal of any description for India in judo.

"Our judo programme has achieved tremendous success over the past few years, which has made us confident about the inherent talent and potential in our country for the sport," said Parth Jindal, the founder of the IIS.

"It is a popular global sport and we are committed to working with the JFI to develop and professionalise the ecosystem for the sport in India."

India sent one judoka to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, with Shushila Likmabam losing her opening bout to Hungary's Eva Csernoviczki in the women's under-48kg.
