Softball Australia has confirmed plans to hold a national selection camp early next year to decide its squad for the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The camp is scheduled to run from February 18 to March 3 at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

Australia's softball squad for Tokyo 2020, pushed back to 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic, had been due to be chosen at the Open Women’s National Championship.

This year's tournament, also called the Gilley's Shield, was cancelled owing to the COVID-19 crisis.

A total of 34 players are set to feature at the national selection camp.

"A lot of us debuted for Australia in 2009 so for us to hold out another 12 months, it’s a small mis-step in our whole 12 year progression,” said pitcher Kaia Parnaby, who has played over 140 games for Australia.

"As much as it hurt us a lot finding out it was getting postponed, we can be another 12 months prepared, we can find out some things we may not have found out about ourselves and I think it’s going to help us grow as a team.

"We never actually thought we’d get to play an Olympic Games when we started our careers, so for us to be less than 12 months out, we’re just excited to get there."
