The German ski resort was scheduled to stage individual and team competitions from February 5 to 7 next year.

But the FIS claimed it was not possible to host the event, citing "too many uncertainties" over when ski lifts and resorts would reopen in Germany and the difficulty in acquiring enough volunteers to implement adequate hygiene measures.

Snowboard Germany was also unsuccessful in its search to find a replacement venue.

"We really wanted to offer our athletes the possibility to race on home soil, especially in this difficult season and we have been working really hard with the local organiser for the past few months to try and make it possible," said Stefan Knirsch, director of finances, marking and management at Snowboard Germany.

"However, the development of the COVID-19 pandemic in the past few weeks made it impossible for us to make the competition happen, despite all efforts and confirmed financial support."

Feldberg is still scheduled to host two FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup ski cross events on January 30 and 31.

"We have been working really hard for weeks to develop hygiene and safety measures that would have made the planned ski and snowboard cross World Cups here in Feldberg possible and we were on a very good path to host both events," said Thorsten Rudolph, head of the Organising Committee in Feldberg.

"We really regret the cancellation, but in the end, it was not possible to acquire enough volunteers, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, to realise the work needed throughout the course of three weeks for the installation and dismantlement of two big events with those strict hygiene measures on top of it all."

German chancellor Angela Merkel is calling for tougher restrictions in the country in a bid to curb rising coronavirus rates.

A total of 29,268 cases were reported yesterday - the second-highest daily total since the beginning of the pandemic.

There were also 568 fatalities registered as Germany’s death toll closes in on reaching the 20,000-mark.

"I understand the complicated situation that the organisers and Snowboard Germany are facing in these difficult times," said Uwe Beier, FIS snowboard cross race director.

"Of course, these are very unfortunate news, however I really want to thank the Hochschwarzwald Tourismus GmbH and Snowboard Germany for all their efforts and hard work put into the preparations and their willingness to try everything possible to make the event happen.

"We are already looking forward to come back in 2021-2022."

The decision to axe the Feldberg leg follows the cancellation of the event in Cervinia in Italy due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Montafon in Austria was scheduled to stage the Snowboard Cross World Cup opener in early December, but this was postponed to January 16 because of weather concerns.

Bergamo in Italy and Veysonnaz in Switzerland are also due to host snowboard cross events.
