USA Curling have cancelled their Under-18 National Championships this year due to the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Originally sheduled to take place in Wausau in Wisconsin in March, the event was initially postponed with the intention of hosting the competition at a later date.

However, the governing body has now conceded that they had no other option but to cancel the event.

"While we were looking forward to seeing you compete in Wausau in Wisconsin in March, the rescheduling of this event was not an option due to so many uncertainties at this time," a statement said.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding that the health of our community is the top priority during these unprecedented times.

"Please know that we are in the process of planning next year's event and we look forward to sharing those details with you in the coming weeks."

The news comes after the World Curling Federation (WCF) announced that the Men's Curling World Championship in Glasgow would not be rescheduled.

United States skip John Schuster, the reigning Olympic gold medallist, expressed his disappointment.

In a statement on the Team Schuster Facebook page, they said: "We're clearly disappointed not having the opportunity to represent Team USA at the 2020 World Championship.

"As athletes, it's a tremendous honour every time we get to wear our country's flag against the world's very best.

"I think we were all hopeful the WCF would find a way for Worlds to be played this fall, but there's too much uncertainty right now and we understand everyone's safety is paramount.

"Our thoughts remain with everyone here at home and around the world who have been touched directly and indirectly by this pandemic."

The US is the most affected country by COVID-19, with more than half a million confirmed cases coming from the nation and more than 23,000 deaths so far.
