Blanka Vlasic has informed the Croatian Olympic Committee (HOO) she will not compete at Tokyo 2020, despite the two-time Olympic medallist making progress in her recovery from injury.

The high jumper has not competed since Rio 2016 due to a heel problem.

Vlasic's father and coach Josko said she has made progress in her recovery, but a request was made to the HOO to remove her from consideration for Tokyo 2020.

"The painstaking and persistent struggle for the healing of Blanka Vlasic has finally yielded good results," Josko Vlasic said to the HOO, according to Total Croatia News.

"The last magnetic resonance imaging showed complete healing of the heel bone.

"However, the Achilles tendon still gives clues to the inflammatory process.

"The level of load she is currently carrying out is at a good level, but our estimate is that level of stress progression and adaptation will not be enough to make her jump two metres.

"Not wanting to sell off her reputation at such a big competition as the Tokyo Olympics, we decided to give up trying to compete in them, giving ourselves more space in the time ahead, to reach the level of opportunity we desire and compete competitively at international competitions."

Vlasic secured a bronze medal in the women's high jump at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, eight years after she earned silver at Beijing 2008.

At Beijing, Vlasic finished level with Belgium's Tia Hellebaut after both athletes cleared 2.05 metres, but she won silver on countback after achieving the height at her second attempt.

The 36-year-old will miss a second Olympic Games due to injury, with an Achilles tendon issue ruling her out of the London 2012 Games.

Vlasic, a two-time world champion indoors and outdoors, currently has the second highest clearance in the women's high jump after achieving a mark of 2.08m in 2009.

Bulgaria's Stefka Kostadinova is the current world record holder, having cleared 2.09m back in 1987.
