World number 27 Greg Lobban shocked fourth seed Karim Abdel Gawad in the last-16 of the Professional Squash Association World Tour Gold St James' Place Canary Wharf Classic in London.

The unseeded Scot toppled the Egyptian in two straight games in an 11-7, 11-9 victory, after overcoming Gawad's compatriot Mazen Hesham in the opening round.

He has now booked a place in the quarter-finals against seventh seed Marwan ElShorbagy, another Egyptian.

Praising his opponent after the match, Lobban said: "Karim is one of the best strikers of the squash ball in the world so a result like that means a lot."

His quarter-final opponent ElShorbagy came from a game down to win prematurely against fellow Egyptian Omar Mosaad, who retired after rolling his ankle and colliding with the sidewall.

With ElShorbagy leading the final game 6-3 when the incident occurred, Mosaad forfeited the match after a 15-minute injury period could not aid his recovery.

He had earlier impressively won the first game 11-2, before losing the second 11-6.

Egypt's second seed Ali Farag made light work of England's Declan James to secure his spot in the next round after winning his tie 11-6, 11-3 in just 27 minutes.

Last season's singles world champion has now set-up a match with fellow Egyptian Fares Dessouky, who handed an upset to compatriot Mohamed Abouelghar.

Dessouky lost the first game to the eighth seed before staging a comeback to win 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, making him the fifth Egyptian into the quarter-finals.

The tournament continues tomorrow.
