Paul Coll of New Zealand stunned world number one Mohamed ElShorbagy to reach the semi-final of the Windy City Open, a Professional Squash Association (PSA) Platinum event, in Chicago. 

The 12-10, 11-7, 11-6 result at the University Club of Chicago's Cathedral Hall was Coll's first victory over the Egyptian.

He is scheduled to take on Karim Abdel Gawad next in a bid to reach his first PSA Platinum tournament final. 

"I am just trying to really enjoy the battle out there," said Coll. 

"Mohamed is such a class act and he has been top of his game for the last five years, if not more, so I just wanted to really enjoy the match with him today."

Egypt's Abdel Gawad had battled against Simon Rösner, overcoming the German 3-11, 11-3, 11-6, 3-11, 11-7.

The remaining men's semi-final is set to be an all-Egyptian affair, with world champion Tarek Momen narrowly defeating Spanish veteran Borja Golan 11-7, 3-11, 11-6, 4-11, 11-3.

Top seed Ali Farag then progressed after easing past Diego Elias of Peru 11-5, 11-5, 11-8.

In the women's contest, top seed Raneem El Welily set up a clash in the last four with fellow Egyptian Nouran Gohar, with both players overcoming American opponents. 

El Welily recorded a comfortable 11-7, 11-8, 11-6 win against Olivia Blatchford , while Gohar beat Amanda Sobhy 11-6, 11-8, 11-8.

Egypt's world champion Nour El Sherbini also progressed with a 11-8, 11-5, 8-11, 11-9 victory over Camille Serme of France. 

Her next opponent is set to be Sarah-Jane Perry of England, who triumphed 11-8, 5-11, 14-12, 9-11, 11-7 in a close encounter with Rowan Elaraby of Egpyt.

The semi-finals in both the men and women's tournaments are due to be played tomorrow.
