All the favourites made it safely through to the quarter finals of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Pan America Cup in the men's and women’s singles in Puerto Rico.

The highest-ranked male player, world number seven Hugo Calderano, had a competitive 4-2 opening round match against Canada’s Jeremy Hazin who took an early 2-1 lead before being turned over by the Brazilian.

United States’ Kanak Jha broke home hearts when he quickly disposed of Puerto Rico’s Hector Berrios in a 4-0 victory.

Calderano’s team-mate Gustavo Tsuboi also got the better of a Canadian opponent in a comfortable 4-1 win over Marko Medjugorac.

Paraguay’s Marcelo Aguirre also made it through in a 4-1 win over Dominican Republic’s Emil Santos.

Top seed Adriana Diaz won in front of a home crowd in the women’s singles in convincing fashion with a straight sets victory over Brazil’s Jessica Yamada.

United States’ duo Lily Zhang and Wu Zue also won in straight sets against Guatemala’s Mabelyn Enriquez and Canada’s Sophie Gauthier respectively.

The closest thing to a shock on the first day was Puerto Rico’s Melanie Diaz coming from 3-2 down to defeat Daniela Ortega of Chile 4-3 in the only match of the day to go to the maximum seven sets.

Day two sets up all eight quarter final matches.
