Professor Yves Vanlandewyck will provide a keynote address at this year's VISTA conference after winning the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) scientific award.

Vanlandewyck, a professor in rehabilitation sciences at the Faculty of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Sciences at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, will address attendees on the opening day of the conference in Amsterdam tomorrow.

He was announced as the recipient of the 2019 IPC Paralympic scientific award in July and is due to collect his award during the event.

Vanlandewyck has led the IPC Classification Research & Development Centre for athletes with an intellectual impairment and the topic is due to feature heavily in his address.

"Having written a review paper in 1996 on classification in Paralympic sport, I am working on a new review on evidence-based classification," he said.

"In my keynote in Amsterdam, I will critically analyse the concept of evidence-based classification and review the road we walked in the past 20 years.

“I would like to dedicate this award to all professionals and volunteers contributing to the Paralympic Movement outside of the spotlights."

Vanlandewyck's keynote is among the highlights on the conference programme, which aims to provide a platform for the academic world, athletes and professional experts to meet and exchange information, research and expertise related to Paralympic sport and the Paralympic Movement.

Britain's Nick Webborn, the chair of the British Paralympic Association and a professor of sport and exercise medicine at the University of Brighton, will be among the other presenters.

Para-sports science, counter measuring heat in athletes, equipment and technology in Para-sports and classification research will be discussed during the three-day conference, concluding on Saturday (September 7).

Athlete health and well-being, including preparation, injury prevention and protection will also feature.
