Arnold lost 11-9, 11-5, 16-18, 7-11, 6-11 to 14th-seeded Indian Tanvi Khanna, while Tong suffered a 9-11, 5-11, 9-11 defeat at the hands of ninth-seeded Japanese Satomi Watanabe.

Action is due to continue tomorrow.

Another squash event continuing today was the European Team Championships at Edgbaston Priory Club in Birmingham.

In the women's event, defending champions and hosts England secured top spot in Pool A with a 3-0 win over The Netherlands.

Awaiting them in tomorrow's semi-finals are Belgium, who had to settle for second place in Pool B after losing 2-1 to France today.

The other last-four encounter pits Pool B winners France against Pool A runners-up Scotland - 2-1 victors at the expense of Wales.

There was also a 3-0 success for Switzerland against Spain in Pool B.

In the men's event, England ensured first place in Pool B with a 4-0 win over Spain.

Their semi-final opponents will be Scotland, who overcame Hungary 4-0 in their last Pool A outing.

If England come through that, they will face either Spain, again, or Pool A winners France.

France beat Germany 3-1 today.
