China were the dominant force as the country hosted a tournament for qualification to the lucrative World Taekwondo Grand Slam Champions Series in Wuxi.

The home nation claimed seven of the eight gold medals on offer at Wuxi Taihu International Expo Centre.

Among their winners in women’s competition was Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist Zheng Shuyin, who beat compatriot Shi Juan in the over-67 kilograms final.

Also tasting victory in all-Chinese finals were last year's champion Zhou Lijun and Guo Yunfei at under-57kg and under-67kg, respectively.

Zhou defeated Luo Zongshi, while Guo overcame Zhang Mengyu.

The one other women’s final saw two-time Olympic and world champion Wu Jingyu delight the home crowd by beating South Korea’s Kang Bo-ra to the under-49kg title.

There were also three triumphs for China in the men’s categories, sealed by wins for Sun Hongyi over fellow countryman Tian Jian at over-80kg as well as Liang Yushuai over compatriot Chen Xiaoyi at under-58kg and world and Olympic champion Zhao Shuai over South Korea’s Kim Seok-bae at under-68kg.

The only non-Chinese gold medallist in Wuxi was South Korea’s Hwan Nam-goong after he defeated home athlete Chen Linglong in the men’s under-80kg final.

The first qualification tournament – WT G-2 Open Qualification Tournament I – enabled three athletes from each Olympic weight category to be selected for the Wuxi finale, which is due to take place from December 17 to 22.
