Hometown favourite Alex Ferreira claimed his first-ever Winter X Games gold medal after winning the men’s ski superpipe event in Aspen in the United States today.

The Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic halfpipe silver medallist came into Aspen 2019 with four medals in six appearances in the discipline, but had never topped a podium.

That changed today as Ferreira triumphed with a score of 92.66 points, beating fellow American and two-time Olympic halfpipe gold medallist David Wise by a margin of 2.33.

New Zealand’s Nico Porteous, 17, finished third with 89.00 points for the bronze medal.

Opening with a score of 90.33 points, Ferreira went into his third and final run guaranteed of securing at least a silver medal with only Wise left to ski.

He ended up bettering his own score to 92.66 points before Wise put down his first clean and solid run, with three doubles spinning in three different directions, to score 90.33 and take the silver medal.

In the women’s ski superpipe event, Canada’s Cassie Sharpe won her first-ever X Games gold medal in the discipline.

Trailing Estonia’s Kelly Sildaru heading into her final run, the Olympic halfpipe champion overtook her rival with a run that scored her 94.00 points.

Sildaru, set to compete in three disciplines in Aspen, won her first-ever ski superpipe medal with a score of 92.33 points for the silver medal.

Canadian rookie Rachael Karker rounded out the podium to clinch bronze with 86.33 points.

In final competition of the night, Canada’s Laurie Blouin, an X Games rookie, won the women’s snowboard big air event.

Blouin, the Olympic slopestyle silver medallist, prevailed with a score of 77.00 points.

New Zealand’s Zoi Sadowski-Synnott finished on the same mark as the 22-year-old to take the silver medal and America's Jamie Anderson came third with 67.00 points.

Medals were also won today in the Special Olympics unified snowboarding event with the American duo of Henry Meece and Chris Klug coming out on top.

It secured them a fifth gold medal in as many years.

Chile’s Juan Guentrutrsipai and America's Scotty Lago finished in second place.

Americans Christopher Perdue and Mike Schultz ranked third to earn their first medals in the event.

The Special Olympics unified snowboarding competition saw two-person teams consisting of an X Games athlete and a Special Olympian take on one run of both competition courses.

Action in Aspen is due to continue tomorrow.
