Reigning Olympic champion Chloe Kim produced a typically-dominant display as she topped the women's halfpipe qualification round at the International Ski Federation Snowboard World Cup in Laax.

The 18-year-old American sensation was streets ahead of the rest of the field, laying down a routine which yielded a huge score of 94.25 points.

Spain's Queralt Castellet was Kim's nearest challenger but was 6.75 adrift of the formidable American in second place.

Arielle Gold, also of the United States, finished third in qualifying after she scored 85.00 points.

Kim will be hoping for a similar result when the final is held on Saturday (January 19).

In men's halfpipe qualifying, Australia's Scotty James, bronze medallist at last year's Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, top scored with 93.00 points.

Seventeen-year-old Yuto Totsuka of Japan was the stand-out performer in the second heat as his routine was rewarded with a total of 91.50.

Norway's Ståle Sandbech took first place in the men's slopestyle qualifying as he scored 92.75 points.

Sven Thorgren of Sweden was second after he managed a score of 89.50 points.

The event in Laax is due to continue tomorrow with women's slopestyle qualification, which was again postponed from today.
