An inspired sprint enabled Italy's Elia Viviani to win the tenth stage at the Vuelta a España - his second win of the race so far - on a day when Britain's Simon Yates maintained his one second overall lead.

With a perfect lead-out from his Quick-Step Floors team-mates, Viviani dominated the sprint at Bermillo de Sayago after the race had resumed following yesterday's rest day.

The Italian thus took his second stage win, a week after a first victory at Alhaurin de la Torre.

This time he outsprinted the Slovakian world champion Peter Sagan, riding for Bora-Hansgrohe, and fellow Italian sprinter Giacomo Nizzolo of Trek-Segafredo.

Viviani finished in 4 hours 8min 8sec, with Sagan and Nizzolo being given the same time.

Yates, riding for Mitchelton-Scott, went through a stage that started in Salamanca without problem and retained the red jersey after defending the narrow individual general classification lead he established over Spain's Alejandro Valverde as he took overall control on Sunday (September 2) night.

Nairo Quintana, riding for Movistar, is third at 14 seconds.
