Japan's women seized the initiative in the USA Softball International Cup in California as they inflicted a first defeat upon Pool B leaders Canada, winning 7-1, before taking over at the top following a 10-0 win over Colombia.

The Japanese team, who now have a 4-0 win record, will have a rest day before meeting the other Pool B favourites USA Bluethe second-string American team competing at the inaugural tournament on home soil, who extended their record to 3-0 on the third day of action with an 18-0 win over Colombia.    

Five USA Blue batters had multi-hit performances at the plate as the team secured their three innings win over Colombia, with Nicolette Udria contributing a grand slam.  

USA Red, comprised of players who will form the nation's roster at the World Championship in the Japanese city of Chiba next month, rested on day three after a 2-0 Pool A win over China on day two had extended their record to 2-0 at the Bill Barber Park in Irvine.

They will return to action on day four with a match against Scrap Yard Fast Pitch, an independent women's professional softball team based in Conroe in Texas, which also holds a 2-0 record at this stage.

Meanwhile China earned their first win in Pool A with an emphatic 7-0 score over Peru.

In the day’s other match, Chinese Taipei won their Pool A match against Puerto Rico 8-5.

The event is considered a key warm-up for August's World Championship which will also offer teams the chance to take their first step towards competing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
