Bennet and David Poniewaz enjoyed a strong start to the World University Beach Volleyball Championship in Munich.

The German twins performed well in front of a home crowd, the top seeds claiming wins in both their Pool A matches in the men’s draw.

Their first victory came over Saudi Arabia’s Dhia Ali Alkhawaher and Ali Hussain Mahfouz, who they beat 21-9, 21-15.

A second success came against Belarus’ Dzmitry Abramenka and Pavel Piatrushka.

The German duo will aim for a third pool win tomorrow, with the knock-out stages also set to get underway.

There was disappointment for another German pairing, with Leonie Körtzinger and Leonie Klinke struggling in the women’s draw.

They opened with a 21-17, 16-21, 15-11 loss to the United States’ Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss.

Körtzinger and Klinke then suffered a 25-23, 17-21, 15-13 defeat to Manolina Konstantinou and Zoi Konstantopoulou.

A total of 32 women’s and men's teams from 29 different countries are competing at the Olympic Park, home to the 1972 Games, in a tournament due to conclude on Friday (July 13).

The Olympic Park in Munich has continued to be used as a venue for national and international sporting events and concerts.

"It is a wonderful opportunity for the student athletes to compete at this iconic Olympic venue," Oleg Matytsin, President of the International University Sports Federation, said.

"We at FISU believe in providing unique opportunities like this for students to compete internationally, so that they are experienced, educated and influenced in a positive way to be fitting leaders of tomorrow."
