Defending champions Finland and the Czech Republic recorded huge victories in the women's tournament as the World University Floorball Championships continued in Lodz in Poland today.

Finland made a dominant entrance at the event as they thrashed Japan 33-0 in Group A at the City Sports Hall.

The Czech Republic, also making their first appearance after sitting out the first session of action yesterday, put 23 goals past Singapore in a rampant display in Group B.

It proved to be a day of high-scoring matches as Finland's men bounced back from defeat to the Czech Republic.

Finland were not quite able to match the exploits of their women's side but were still far too strong for Japan as they recorded a 29-2 triumph in Group B.

In Group A, Slovakia failed to build on their win over Singapore yesterday after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Switzerland.

The top two in each of the men's groups will progress to the semi-finals.

The women's competition follows a slightly different format as the top two teams will qualify directly for the semi-finals.

The sides who finish second will play the third-placed teams in the other group in quarter-finals.
