Poland's women made an impressive start to the World University Floorball Championships as the host nation thrashed Japan on the opening day of the tournament in Lodz.

Poland were in dominant form as they recorded a 10-0 victory over their Japanese opponents in Group A of the women's event at Lodz University of Technology's Sports Hall.

Agata Arendarczyk, Justyna Krzywak and Agnieszka Timek all chipped in with two golds in a rampant display from the Polish team.

Olga Rokicka, Katarzyna Rogala, Karolina Damps and Anna Borkowska also got on the scoresheet.

In the other women's match held today, Sweden hammered Singapore 10-0 in Group B.

Slovakia won the first match of the tournament as they beat Singapore 4-1 in Group A of the men's competition, while hosts Poland were beaten 7-2 by Switzerland.

In Group B, the Czech Republic got the better of Finland with a 6-2 triumph.

The top two in each of the men's groups will progress to the semi-finals.

The women's competition follows a slightly different format as the top two teams will qualify directly for the semi-finals.

The sides who finish second will play the third-placed teams in the other group in quarter-finals.
