Lifters from France and the United States were among the winners as masters competition began at the International Powerlifting Federation's (IPF) Classic World Championships in Calgary.

Classic - or unequipped - competition will take place until June 17 at the Rally Pointe Center.

Men's and women's events are part of the programme as well as junior and masters - veterans - competitions.

In the men's masters four division for those aged between 65 and 70, United States' Iain Burgess and Jeff Hughes each enjoyed successes.

Burgess prevailed at under-59 kilograms with total lifts of 290kg while Hughes earned under-83kg honours with 410kg.

France's Christian Buchs took the under-105kg event with 563kg while Great Britain also enjoyed success courtesy of Ernie Parkes with 462.5kg.

In women's masters two events for those aged between 50 and 59, Nathalie Feraud ensured more French success with total lifts of 282.5kg in the under-47kg division.

She defeated American rival Shyami Murphy, who was second with 265kg.

Felicia Greenidge also took a home win for Canada with 402.5kg in the under-84kg contest.
