Spain's Omar Fraile won stage five of the Tour of the Basque Country as Slovenia's Primož Roglič increased his grip on the general classification with just one day of racing remaining.

Astana's Fraile was part of an early breakaway on a mountainous stage which saw the peloton travel 164.7 kilometres from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Eibar.

He eventually wheeled away to secure victory following a sprint finish, ending in 3 hours 53min 59sec.

Roglič, the winner of yesterday's time trial and the silver medallist in that discipline at last year's World Championships in Bergen, resisted attempts to wrestle the leader's yellow jersey away from him and rode brilliantly to finish second behind Fraile.

It was the third runners-up finish so far for the LottoNL–Jumbo man who was second on both of the opening two stages behind France's Julian Alaphilippe.

The Frenchman was dropped by the pack today and is now nearly three minutes adrift of Roglič in fourth place in the general classification.

The Slovenian leads on 17:35.19 with his closest challenger Ion Izagirre of Spain 2:13 behind, riding for Bahrain-Merida.

Another stage in the mountains will conclude the International Cycling Union World Tour race tomorrow.

The riders will travel 122.2km from Eibar to Arrate.
