England's Karl Boyes produced a stunning comeback to edge Germany's Ralf Souquet to book his place in the semi-finals of the World Pool Masters in Gibraltar.

Boyes, who knocked out defending champion David Alcaide of Spain yesterday, was staring defeat in the face when trailed 7-2 at the Tercentenary Sports Hall.

But a spirited performance from the Englishman saw him gradually claw his way back into the match before he clinched a dramatic 8-7 win.

Scotland's Jayson Shaw had earlier completed a comeback of his own as he beat Germany's Joshua Filler 8-5 to secure his spot in the quarter-finals.

Dennis Orcollo of The Philippines is also through after defeating Chris Melling of England 8-3.

Orcollo's compatriot Alex Pagulayan progressed with an 8-4 victory over Dutchman Alex Lely, while England's Darren Appleton registered an 8-6 win in his first round clash with American Earl Strickland.

Strickland's team-mate Shane Van Boening, a two-time World Pool Masters winner, fared better as he reached the last eight by beating England's Daryl Peach 8-2.

"I have been a bit quiet over the last 12 months because of some personal issues, so I haven’t played as much as I would like so I’m not as competitive as I should be," Appleton said.

"At the end there I was starting to feel it but I held myself to get over the line.

"It is tough playing against Earl. He is a great player but he can be quite intimidating when he gets going – it can be hard to keep up with him."

The event is due to conclude tomorrow.
