Defending champion David Alcaide was knocked out in the first round of the World Pool Masters in Gibraltar.

He was beaten at the Tercentenary Sports Hall by England's Karl Boyes, who came through 8-3.

Sixteen of pool's biggest names are part of the sport's most prestigious invitational event as it celebrates its quarter-centenary.

All matches are race to eight in the nine-ball tournament, with the winning breaking.

Two other first round matches were played today.

Niels Feijen of The Netherlands proved too strong for India's Raj Hundal, winning 8-2.

Ralf Souquet of Germany came through against Poland's Karol Skowerski, 8-4.

The five-remaining first round matches will take place tomorrow along with one quarter final - the match between Souquet and Boyes.
