Sudan defeated 2014 winners Libya in dramatic circumstances in the third-place match of the African Nations Championship at the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco.

Striker Waala Musa had opened the scoring for Sudan in the eighth minute and his team looked set for bronze only for Libyan forward Salem Ablo to take the match to a nail-biting penalty shoot-out thanks to his goal just six minutes from time.

Both teams converted their first two penalties, but it was Libya's Elmehdi Mohamed Elhouni who was first to fall victim to his nerves as he missed from the spot, giving Sudan the advantage.

Sudan then converted their next two penalties, meaning match goalscorer Ablo had to score to keep his side in the tie.

Unfortunately for him, his earlier elation in the match turned to despair as he missed the crucial kick, handing Sudan a 4-2 win in the shoot-out and the tournament's bronze medal.

The final takes place tomorrow with hosts Morocco taking on Nigeria at Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca.

Morocco defeated Libya 3-1 after extra time in their semi-final whilst Nigeria recorded a 1-0 win over Sudan.

Neither side has reached the final of the competition in its nine-year history.

Only African based players are eligible to compete.
