German duo Felix Loch and Natalie Geisenberger will both take a giant step towards sealing the overall Luge World Cup title in the men's and women's events respectively if they can secure victory during the penultimate competition of the season in Lillehammer this weekend.

Loch and Geisenberger remain in pole position following the most recent leg of the World Cup series in Oberhof last weekend.

Olympic champion Loch triumphed in the men's event in the German city, while Geisenberger was forced to settle for second place in a clean sweep from the host nation.

The competition in Lillehammer, which hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics, begins tomorrow with the women's and doubles events.

Geisenberger, who won two gold medals at Sochi 2014, has been in ominous form throughout the season as she prepares to defend her Olympic titles at next month's Games in Pyeongchang.

The 29-year-old is streets ahead on the women's leaderboard as she has a total of 795 points.

Germany are on course for a sweep of the top three positions as Dajana Eitberger, winner of the event in Oberhof, is second on 618 points.

Tatjana Hüfner is third on 585 points.

Loch is also in command in the race for the overall men's title as he occupies top spot on 671 points, 103 in front of Austria's Wolfgang Kindl.

Semion Pavlichenko of Russia is also still in the hunt as he has 521 points in third.

The men's event is scheduled for Sunday (January 21).

Following the event in the Norwegian town, the Luge World Cup season is due to conclude in Sigulda in Latvia from January 27 to 28.
