A man accused of planting the bomb which hit the Borussia Dortmund football team bus has admitted detonating explosives along the route.

The defendant, named only as "Sergei W", is a German of Russian origin but his full name has not been revealed.

He told a Dortmund court that he had not intended to kill anybody.

The incident which was initially thought to be a terrorist attack, left defender Marc Batra with a fractured wrist and a police officer suffering from hearing loss.

Three bombs loaded with metal pins were hidden in a hedge before being set-off as the bus passed en-route to a home Champions League match against AS Monaco on April 11 last year.

It is believed by prosecutors that Sergei W was hoping to profit from the German Bundesliga team's share price plunging as a result of the attack.

He has been charged with 28 counts of attempted murder as well as two counts of bodily harm and setting off an explosion.

He denies this charge, however, and told a court that he "deeply regrets" his behaviour.

If found guilty, Sergei W faces a life sentence in prison.
