Britain’s Katie Archibald and Denmark’s Niklas Larsen claimed gold medals on the opening day of the International Cycling Union (UCI) Track World Cup in Milton in Canada.

The duo emerged as winners of the points races events, providing the only gold medals as competition got underway at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre.

Larsen, a silver medallist in the points race at the European Championships, gained a lap on the field in the men’s event.

It placed him in pole position to claim victory having secured 20 points, while he then boosted his haul by winning three sprints.

The 20-year-old finished on a winning tally of 40 points, with Britain’s Mark Stewart taking the silver medal on 19 points.

Belgium’s Kenny De Ketele rounded off the podium on a tally of 15 points. 

The women’s event saw Archibald battle to victory, having been among four riders to gain a lap on the field.

The Rio 2016 team pursuit gold medallist triumphed at the end of the race by scoring 47 points, with Canada’s Jasmin Duehring and the Czech Republic’s Jarmila Machacova completing the podium on 38 and 24 points respectively.

France’s Coralie Demay missed out on a medal, ending on a total of 22 points.

The host nation impressed in team pursuit competition, with Canada leading women’s qualification by finishing in a time of 4min 22.310sec.

New Zealand will expect to rival the hosts later in the competition after they clocked 4:25.129 to finish second.

The men’s team pursuit qualification saw New Zealand top the standings on 3:59.588, with Canada second on 4:01.245.

New Zealand posted the fastest time in men’s team sprint by crossing the line in 43.874, with France and Britain completing the top three in 44.171 and 44.174 respectively.

Germany led the women’s team sprint event by clocking 33.118, followed by South Korea on 33.810.
