Defending champions England and top seeds Egypt each reached the semi-finals of the World Squash Federation Men's World Team Championship today in Marseille.

Egypt are now due to face Hong Kong in the semi-finals tomorrow and England will meet old rivals Australia.

England's Nick Matthew was forced to dig deep in the opening match at the Modern Squash and Salle Vallier before winning an epic encounter against India's Saurav Ghosal.

He eventually prevailed 11-6, 6-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-9 in 76 minutes.

Team-mates Daryl Selby and James Willstrop then enjoyed more straightforward successes to complete a 3-0 win.

Selby won 11-2, 11-4, 11-2 against Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu and Willstrop overcame Vikram Malhotra 11-4, 9-11, 11-8.

Egypt overcame Scotland 3-0 in the first quarter-final.

Karim Abdel Gawad beat Alan Clyne 12-10, 11-6, 11-6 before Ramy Ashour prevailed 11-5, 11-9, 11-4 versus Kevin Moran.

Marwan Elshorbagy then completed the job with a 11-7, 11-8 success over Greg Lobban.

Hong Kong surprised third seeds France 2-1 in the final match this evening.

Gregory Gaultier won the opening game 11-6, 11-5, 13-11 over Max Lee before the Asian side fought back.

Yip Tsz-Fung beat Mathieu Castagnet 11-7, 7-11, 9-11, 11-2, 11-4 and then Leo Au won the decider 11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 11-2 against Gregoire Marche.

Australia were also pushed hard before defeating New Zealand 2-1.

Ryan Cuskelly lost to Paul Coll 11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-9 but then Zac Alexander won 11-4, 11-6, 12-10 against Evan Williams.

Cameron Pilley secured the Australian victory with a 11-3, 11-8, 11-9 success over Campbell Grayson.
