Athletes from 43 nations have arrived in the Portuguese city Vila Real de Santo António for the 2017 International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) World Games.

The event begins tomorrow with the Opening Ceremony and is due to conclude next Wednesday (December 6).

Competitors are set to participate across five sports - archery, athletics, swimming, Para taekwondo and table tennis.

Sporting action at the World Games, a biennial event last held in 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games host city Sochi two years ago, is scheduled to begin on Sunday (December 3).

The 2017 World Games were initially awarded to Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates before the city withdrew last December due to financial concerns.

Vila Real de Santo António was named as the replacement host for the multi-sport event in March of this year.

Competition will take place at the Vila Real de Santo António Complexo Desportivo, a high-performance training centre equipped with a wide variety of sporting facilities.

Organisers have been pleased with the Portuguese city's preparations following their confirmation as hosts.

IWAS officials conducted a final site visit to Vila Real de Santo António earlier this month in order to assess the state of progress.

The event will be the last held under the tenure of IWAS President Paul DePace, who is standing down after serving two four-year terms.

Rudi Van Den Abbeele of France and Russian Pavel Rozhkov are in the running to replace DePace.

The election is due to be held at the IWAS General Assembly on Saturday (December 2).
