Aviation technology experts 51 Aero have been announced as the official tracking partner of the Air Race 1 World Cup in Thailand.

The California-based company will support the competition by installing GPS devices on the 17 competing aircrafts at the event.

It is claimed this will help to ensure fair contests and provide accurate finishing positions after each race.

With tracking devices installed, it will ensure pilots do not cut corners during the race around the five kilometre oval circuit.

"I’m delighted to welcome 51 Aero on board as the official tracking partner of the Air Race 1 World Cup,” said Jeff Zaltman, Air Race 1 chief executive.

“With our pilots racing at such high speeds, it is vital we have the latest tech tracking the race planes to not only determine race results but also further enhance the safety of all competitors.

“I’ve been really impressed by 51 Aero’s tracking systems and their passion for the sport called formula one air racing.

“This partnership will only add to what is already shaping up to be an unforgettable contest in Thailand.”

The event is scheduled to take place at Thailand’s U-Tapao Naval Airbase from November 17 to 19.

Competition will be hosted by the Sports Authority of Thailand, which is part of Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sport.

It is claimed each race will see up to eight pilots go head-to-head at speeds of 250 miles per hour.

Fred Roscher, founder of 51 Aero, has claimed the company are delighted to have become involved in support for the event.

“We’ll be tracking the positions of the airplanes as they race round the pylons and also their altitude, as we don’t want them flying too close to the ground.

“Almost instantaneously after each race, we’ll be able to declare if it was a clean contest, with no pylon cuts.

“The Air Race 1 World Cup is going to be an incredibly awesome event.

“We’ve been part of the Reno racing scene for so many years, seeing the vast amounts of people the sport attracts, so it’s a brilliant idea to take formula one air racing to new countries and venues.

“The backdrop in Thailand will be spectacular.”
