Croatia's Tin Srbic secured his country's first Artistic Gymnastics World Championships gold medal by triumphing in the men's horizontal bar final in Montreal.

The 21-year-old produced an impressive display at the Montreal Olympic Stadium to emerge as the victor of the competition, following a thrilling final.

While several of Srbic's rivals made errors during their routine, the Croatian delivered under pressure to finish with a score of 14.433, which proved enough to secure the gold.

London 2012 Olympic champion Epke Zonderland had looked set to miss out on the podium after an error on a release, but the Dutchman hung on to the bar with one hand to the crowd's amazement, before completing the remainder of his routine.

His effort fell short of sealing a third world title, following success in 2013 and 2014, but Zonderland's score of 14.233 saw him take the silver medal.

Zonderland was joined on the podium by his compatriot Bart Deurloo, who finished with a score of 14.200.

Japan's Kenzo Shirai emerged as the winner of a closely fought vault final, winning the title by 0.001 points.

The newly crowned floor world champion achieved a score of 14.900 for his two vaults, narrowly holding off the challenge of Ukraine's Igor Radivilov.

The Ukrainian was forced to settle for the silver medal by scoring 14.899, missing out on gold by the smallest margin possible in the sport.

South Korea's Kim Hansol secured the bronze, having finished with a total score of 14.766.

Japan also enjoyed rare success in women's competition, with Mai Murakami becoming only the second female gymnastics world champion from the nation.

She joined Keiko Tanaka, who won the beam title back in 1954, as Murakami triumphed in the floor event by scoring 14.233.

The United States' Jade Carey claimed silver on 14.200, while Britain's Claudia Fragapane rounded off the medal positions by scoring 13.933 for bronze.

Germany's Pauline Schaefer was crowned women's beam champion, having received a score of 13.533 from the judges.

Schaefer, the bronze medallist in 2015, was followed by newly crowned all-round champion Morgan Hurd, with the American ending on 13.400.

The podium was completed by Tabea Alt, with the German finishing with a score of 13.300.

China's Zou Jingyuan won the men's parallel bars title, denying Olympic champion Oleg Verniaiev the world crown.

Zou achieved a score of 15.900 on the discipline to push his Ukrainian rival into second place, with Verniaiev settling for silver on 15.833.

Russia's David Belyavskiy rounded off the top three, after achieving a score of 15.266.

The next edition of the Championships will be in Qatar's capital city Doha, with action set to take place in October and November next year.
