Japanese star Kōhei Uchimura will bid for a seventh consecutive individual all-around title when he competes at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships at the Montreal Olympic Stadium this week.

Uchimura, arguably the most well-known name in gymnastics, is among the headline gymnasts due to participate at the event, which begins in the Canadian city tomorrow and concludes next Sunday (October 8).

The 28-year-old, who became the first gymnast to retain an Olympic all-around gold medal at last year's Games in Rio de Janeiro, is hoping to continue his history-making trend as he will draw level with legendary Belarusian Vitaly Scherbo's total of 12 world titles if he claims two crowns in Montreal.

Uchimura, nicknamed King Kōhei, has 19 World Championships medals to his name and is among the favourites for the all-around title.

Ukraine's Oleg Verniaev, who pushed the Japanese gymnast all the way in the all-around event at Rio 2016, is also likely to contend.

"I have no particular objectives when it comes to results," said Uchimura.

"But as I’ve never had the feeling that my performances were perfect at the six World Championships I’ve done in the past, my principal objective is to give perfect performances.

"If I manage that, the results should follow.

"I want to do my best, particularly to obtain medals on the events I qualify for."

The women's event is set to be a wide-open affair as American Simone Biles, the reigning Olympic and world all-around champion, will not be competing as she is currently taking a sabbatical from the sport.

Biles has not trained at all this year but is looking to return to competitive action in 2018.

Her absence has opened the door for the likes of 17-year-old compatriot Ragan Smith and Romania's Larisa Iordache.

The World Championships begin with three days of qualifying tomorrow before the first final - the men's all-around - takes place on Thursday (October 5).

The women's equivalent follows the next day before individual finals are held next Saturday (October 7) and Sunday.
