The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has today confirmed that International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach will not be attending the World Championships here, as was originally scheduled.

Bach, who is from Germany, was due to present a gold medal to one of the event’s 10 champions on September 2.

He sent a message of good luck during the Opening Ceremony, which was held on Thursday (August 24).

"Thomas Bach will not attend the AIBA World Championships," an AIBA spokesperson told insidethegames

"This is the reason why he has sent a welcome message, which was read at the Opening Ceremony."

The spokesperson pointed out that AIBA President C K Wu met with Bach at the National Games of China in Tianjin today.

IOC sports director Kit McConnell is due to arrive at the end of the week to have meetings with AIBA and witness some of the World Championships action.

The World Championships are taking place here under a cloud.

It comes after a total of 13 of 15 members of the ruling AIBA Executive Committee opposed Wu at a meeting in Moscow last month before setting up a rival Interim Management Committee (IMC) in an attempt to bring about his removal.

An Extraordinary General Assembly is likely to be held in October in Lausanne at which national governing bodies - as statutes dictate - will decide on whether Wu retains his position.

The IMC claim this crucial meeting, however, will take place in Dubai on November 12 and would like a pre-meeting to be held in the same city on September 23.

They have sent a letter to Wu to this effect based on purposes such as fulfilling Executive Committee duties which they have not been able to accomplish and proving the Executive Committee's efforts to stabilise the current AIBA situation continuously.

Wu insisted on Wednesday (August 23) that all members of the IMC will be free to attend the event following claims that some had been denied accreditation.
