Romania's Eduard Serban won his country's first medal of the International Judo Federation Cadet World Championships in Santiago as individual competition drew to a close today.

Serban, a European Youth Olympic Festival bronze medallist, defeated Japan's Kenshin Mori to win gold in the final of the under 90 kilograms category.

A golden score period was required to determine a winner at the Santiago National Stadium.

Just seven seconds into added time, Mori launched an untidy attack and was caught off balance as Serban managed to throw his rival for a match-winning ippon.

The first bronze medal was clinched by Canada's Benjamin Kendrick, while Russia's Said Gadzhiev completed the podium.

Junior Asian Championships winner Kim Minjong of South Korea ended the 20-contest winning streak of Russian David Babayan of Russia to win gold in the over 90kg division.

With six seconds remaining, Babayan initiated an illegal bear hug from which Kim was still able to throw his opponent for a waza-ari.

The score was chalked off, however, and instead a third shido was correctly given to the Russian which resulted in hansoku-make for a third foul.

The first bronze medal was won by Germany's Jonas Schreiber and Turkey's Omer Aydin secured the second.

Cadet European Championships winner Marlene Galandi of Germany won the opening final on day four as she brushed past Millena Silva of Brazil in just 24 seconds to take under 70kg gold.

Silva, younger sister of Rio 2016 Olympian Mariana Silva, had no time to get into the contest as Galandi claimed victory by ippon within the opening stages.

Japan's Rizu Matsumoto and Raffaela Igl of Germany won the bronze medals.

Croatia's five-time Cadet European Cup winner, Helena Vukovic, won over 70kg competition.

European Youth Olympic Festival and Cadet European Championships winner Sophio Somkhishvili had the chance to win Georgia’s first women’s world judo title.

But, after 83 seconds of golden score, her Croatian opponent threw her for an uchi-mata to seal victory.

The first bronze medal was claimed by 17-year-old Cadet Pan American Championships winner Luiza Cruz of Brazil with Japan's Akiho Yonekawa winning the other.

Japan finished top of the individual medal table with three gold, two silver and seven bronze medals.

Mixed team competition is due to bring the Championships to a close tomorrow.

Confirmation of the decision to add the event to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic programme came from the International Olympic Committee in June.

"The mixed team event on Sunday is a historic occasion for our sport as it is the first ever mixed team event at an IJF competition," said IJF sports director Armen Bagdasarov.

"The mixed team event is a new and exciting format that will be used at all future editions of the World Championships, including later this month in Budapest."
