Brazil's Agatha Bednarczuk and Eduarda Santos Lisboa suffered a surprise defeat to finish in third place in their pool at the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach Volleyball World Championships in Vienna.

The tournament's third seeds were beaten 21-19, 21-15 by Madelein Meppelink and Sophie van Gestel of The Netherlands at the Red Bull Beach Arena on Danube Island.

Victory saw the Dutch pair finish top of the Pool C standings, with Canada’s Julie Gordon and Camille Saxton progressing in second.

Agatha and Eduarda will now face a tough last 32 match at the competition, as they take on Pool F winners Barbora Hermannova and Marketa Slukova of the Czech Republic.

Agatha claimed gold at the 2015 edition of the tournament with Barbara Seixas and her former team-mate also suffered defeat yesterday, but also made it to the knock-out stages.

Top seeded Talita Antunes and Larissa Franca of Brazil won Pool A today, as they claimed a 21-16, 21-19 win over Germany’s Isabel Schneider and Victoria Bieneck.

The tournament favourites will take on lucky losers in their first knock-out match of the competition.

In the men’s competition, Russia’s Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Nikita Liamin were in impressive form as they topped Pool F.

They beat Dries Koekelkoren and Tom van Walle of Belgium 21-16, 21-15 to continue their 100 per cent record.

“Today was very difficult because it was very windy,” said Liamin.

“Sometimes it helped, sometimes it didn’t.

“It’s very good for us but now all teams are very strong and will have to concentrate.”

The Russian pair are currently top ranked on the FIVB World Tour and will discover their knock-out opponents tomorrow.
