France swept aside Canada Quebec to claim the gold medal in the women's basketball event on the penultimate day of competition at the Francophone Games in Abidjan.

The favourites comfortably beat their less-fancied opponents 73-53 to ensure they finished at the summit of the podium at the Palais des Sports in the Ivorian capital.

The bronze medal went the way of Senegal, who edged Wallonia 54-50 in the third place play-off.

Senegal were the dominant nation in the African wrestling discipline as they clinched three of the four gold medals on offer in the women's categories.

Nahamie Sambou overcame Josiane Danimbe of Chad to secure the 45 kilograms crown, with bronze going to Caroline Yapi of the Ivory Coast as she proved too strong for Oumarou Saratou of Niger.

Senegal were denied victory in the 50kg event as Madalina Linguraru of Romania ousted Binette Diatta in the final.

Tiemongo Soro clinched bronze for the Ivory Coast as she beat Niger's Idi Adama Hanna.

Cameroon's Emilienne Tiako also got the better of a Senegalese opponent as she triumphed in the 60kg weight class by beating Safietou Goudiaby in the gold medal bout.

Marie Therese Tanga got Senegal back on track by taking bronze with victory over Esther Nkiema of Burkina Faso.

Tanga's team-mate Anta Sambou then ensured Senegal returned to the top of the podium in a sport which was formed in the country as she won the 80kg competition.

Sambou had too much strength for Chad's Godah Samsia Gassida in the final, while Catalina Axente of Romania beat Niger's Hadjara Amadou.

Senegal also wrapped up the team title with a comprehensive 4-1 win against the Ivory Coast.

Cameroon took home bronze as they narrowly overcame Niger 3-2.
