Daniela Sabatino scored twice as Italy bowed out of the UEFA Women’s European Championships on a high by beating Sweden 3-2 at the De Vijverberg Stadium in Doetinchem.

An entertaining contest sprang into life in the fourth minute of the game when Sabatino steered a shot into the Swedish net from close range, after the defence had failed to clear a right wing cross.

Sweden, who faced the prospect of potentially joining Italy in being eliminated from the competition if they tasted defeat, drew themselves level after 14 minutes.

Lotta Schelin converted from the penalty spot after Stina Blackstenius was tripped from behind in the area.

Sabatino restored Italy’s lead as half-time approached, steering a delightful volley into the top left corner of the Swedish net, having been picked out by a deep cross into the box.

Italy were pegged back two minutes into the start of the second half, with Blackstenius tapping in from close range from a low cross.

Cristiana Girelli would give Italy the lead for the third time in the match, tucking in at the far post from a left wing cross in the 85th minute.

Italy held on to claim the victory, while Sweden progressed to the quarter-finals despite tasting defeat.

They had Germany to thank for their progression, as the holders ended Russia’s hopes of reaching the knock-out phase.

A 10th minute penalty from Babett Peter gave Germany a 1-0 lead, which they preserved into half-time.

The eight-time winners doubled their advantage after the break, with Dzsenifer Marozsán slotting home their second penalty of the match to seal a 2-0 triumph.

Having topped Group B, Germany will now face Group A runners-up Denmark in the quarter-finals.

Sweden will face the challenge of Group A winners and hosts The Netherlands.

Group C will conclude tomorrow, before the final Group D matches on Thursday (July 27).
