A bidding process has been launched to find a host city for the fifth edition of the Youth Parapan American Games in 2021.

A record number of 1,000 athletes are expected to compete in the event designed for young athletes aged between 13 and 21.

All 31 members of the Americas Paralympic Committee (AMC) have been invited to apply.

A host city is expected to be announced "early next year".

It is hoped the event will continue to "promote the development of the bases and increasing the number of young athletes practicing Para Sport in the continent".

The Youth Parapan American Games were first held in Barquisimeto in Venezuela in 2005 before subsequent editions in Bogota in Colombia in 2009, Buenos Aires in Argentina in 2013 and São Paulo earlier this year.

More than 800 athletes from 19 countries competed in 12 sports in the Brazilian city.

"At the 2003 Parapan American Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina, we noticed that one of the most visible problems in the Americas was the high average age of the Para athletes in the different countries," said APC President Jose Luis Campo.

"To change that reality we decided to create a platform from which young people between 13 and 21 years old could assess their abilities in a continental event and, in consequence, launch their careers ahead of future Parapan American Games and Paralympic Games.

"The bar has been set high, a fascinating challenge for the future.

"We would like to invite all 31 countries who are members of the APC interested in organising the 2021 Youth Parapans to send us their candidacy.

"We are enthusiastic about deepening this process, promoting Para Sport in the continent, strengthening the union between the countries, consolidating the work together and cooperating in the formation of increasingly equitable societies."

the Pan American Sports Organization is currently considering whether to introduce a similar regional youth event for Olympic-level athletes.
